'One World, One Dream'
Australia's Olympic tradition will continue in the People's Republic of China for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, Beijing 2008.
Athletics will take place from August 15 to 24 at the Olympic Green, the centerpiece of the Games. As well as the Olympic Stadium, it will also house the Olympic Village and venues for 15 sports.
The capital of China lies in the country's north-east and is home to 14.5 million residents with the metropolitan area extending some 80 kilometres from the Forbidden City and Tiannanmen Square.
Since winning the bid for 2008 in July 2001, Beijing and China as a whole has been undergoing enormous change both in terms of the built environment and socially. Visitors to Beijing in 2008 will experience a city that blends 3000 years of history with ground breaking technology and design.
Preparations
Athletics Australia and the Australia Olympic Committee have already begun extensive preparations for the games, with a number of planning trips for High Performance staff and coaches as well as tour to the country.
In 2006, Australia competed at the IAAF World Junior Championhsips in Athletics, held in the Olympic city, giving our under 20 athletes a preview of the experience that awaits in 2008.
In addition a distance development squad visited in April and an Ekiden team ran in November.
Over the final 18 months leading into the games, more squads will visit Beijing and the 2007 Osaka World Championships, in Japan, will allow Australia's athletes to become accustomed to the preparations needed to compete in northern Asia in August, as well as the training facilities that will be available for Beijing.
