Athletics Australia Board of Directors

The Athletics Australia Board of Directors comprises eight individuals, that bring with them a breadth of knowledge across business, finance, commercialisation, sports strategy and governance.

Mark Arbib
President

Mark was appointed to the Athletics Australia Board of Directors in November 2015, before being unanimously appointed to the role of President following the resignation of David Grace.

An avid recreational runner, regularly participating in his local parkrun, Mark is a former Australian Senator, serving as the Federal Minister for Sport (2010-2012) in the Gillard Government. 

Mark is currently employed as the Director of Strategy and Business for Consolidated Press Holdings Pty. Ltd.

 

Brenda La Porte
Vice President

Brenda has most recently served as the General Manager - Strategy, Planning and Workforce for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

She has extensive experience in the business of sport including the creation of Cricket Australia’s newest commercial property the Big Bash League. Prior to this her roles have included the position of General Manager - Project Planning, Risk and Strategy at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and Senior Advisor to the Australian International Sporting Events Secretariat.

Brenda holds a Bachelor of Business, a Masters of Business Administration & a Masters of Business.

Jan Swinhoe
Vice President

Jan was appointed to the Athletics Australia Board of Directors in 2014. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) majoring in pure mathematics and is an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, as well as a Graduate of the Institute of Company Directors.

Today, she sits on the Board of Directors of a number of institutions including Mercer Superannuation Australia Limited, Mercer Investments Australia Limited, IMB Bank, Suncorp Portfolio Services Limited and Australian Philanthropic Services. 

Peter Bromley
Director

Peter was the President of Athletics New South Wales before joining the Athletics Australia Board of Directors. He is also a former President of Ku Ring Gai Little Athletics Club and a founding member of the Gosford Athletics Club.

A former state champion at 1500m, Peter has a Bachelor of Business and Certificate IV Financial Services. He is currently employed as the General Manager, SME Sales for Core Logic.


John Steffensen
Director

John joined the Athletics Australia Board in 2016 after a decorated career as one of Australia's best 400m runners. A three-time Olympian, John was a part of the 'Silver Bullets' 4 x 400m relay team that won silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics. John also won individual gold at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

A colourful character on the track, John been a passionate contributor to the sport of athletics for many years and has inspired many others.

Since his professional retirement, John has remained in the sport both as a coach to young aspiring track athletes and in the media, as co-host of Channel Nine's Wide World of Sports.

In the business world, John has involvement with juice bar, Top Juice and was runner-up in the 2013 Australian edition of Celebrity Apprentice.

Anne Lord
Director

A member of the IAAF Cross Country Commission, Anne is a former President of Athletics Victoria. She has served as a Team Manager at multiple instalments of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the Commonwealth Games, as well as the team physiotherapist at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Anne has a Bachelor of Science (Physiotherapy) and a Certificate of Hydrotherapy. She is a Graduate Member, Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Life Member of Athletics Victoria.

Geoff Nicholson
Director

Geoff was appointed to the Athletics Australia Board of Directors in November 2015.

He is a Non-Executive Director and Consultant currently contributing to the efforts of the United Energy Distribution Group, Marchment Hill Consulting and Hanover Welfare Services.

Geoff is the Chair of the Athletics Australia Audit & Risk Committee.

Ben Sellenger
Director

Ben was appointed to the Athletics Australia Board of Directors in November 2015.

He is the Chief Operating Officer of Bastion EBA, a commercial strategy agency with a significant focus on sports and stadia. 

Ben is the Chair of the Project Nitro Steering Committee, leading the development of a new team based competition structure to feature as part of the Australian athletics season.

  Chris Wardlaw
Director

Chris was appointed to the Athletics Australia Board of Directors in 2016, Chris has been enthusiastically involved in athletics across his life.

An Olympian at Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980, Chris has gone on to become a renowned distance running coach. He has served as an Athletics Australia Selectors; worked as part of team management for Australia's athletics team and in more recent years been regularly involved in governance related roles with Athletics Australia.

He was the Chair of the Glasgow Review that followed the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
