Athletics Australia Executive Team

Darren Gocher

Darren is an experienced senior executive and was the CEO of Nitro Athletics - the extremely successful and innovative series that helped to revolutionise the sport globally. Prior to this, he was at News Corp, where he held the position of General Manager of Business Operations and General Manager of Strategic Initiatives. He was also the CEO of Penn Health and held various roles at Yahoo! over 12 years, including senior executive roles in the US, Singapore and India. Darren began his professional career at KPMG, spending almost 9 years with the company and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Darren is passionate about athletics and has deep knowledge and experience within the sport. He is an avid runner, regular parkrunner and has four children all participating in the sport.


Adam Bishop
General Manager – Participation and Community Strategy

Adam was appointed as the Interim High Performance Director at Athletics Australia in December 2017 before moving in to the General Manager, Participation and Community Strategy role in July 2018. Prior to that, he spent 9 years as the CEO of Athletics South Australia.

Adam holds a Masters degree in Sports Administration, a Bachelor of Education with majors in physical education and English, and is a graduate fellow of the renowned Governor’s Leadership Foundation program. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and currently serves as a non-executive director of Community Living Options which is a large disability services provider based in South Australia.

Adam is a former All Schools National Champion, an Australian representative at the World University Cross Country Championships and attended college in the United States on a scholarship. He is also a current Level 4 Athletics Australia accredited coach.


Darren Boyd
Manager – Legal Compliance, Integrity & Governance

Darren joined Athletics Australia in June 2017. His role focuses on managing AA’s legal, integrity and governance related issues. Before joining AA, Darren worked as a sports lawyer at Lander & Rogers, a Commercial Manager at an ASX 50 firm, and a sports commentator. He is a keen recreational runner.


Rob Ewart
Finance Manager

Rob is Athletics Australia’s Finance Manager. He has been at the organisation for over 5 years in a number of varied roles including Business Manager, Company Secretary and Chief Operating Officer.

Rob has extensive experience in both community and professional sport, having held senior executive positions at three AFL clubs including Chief Financial Officer at Hawthorn FC, Chief Operating Officer at Melbourne FC and Chief Financial Officer at North Melbourne FC.

Rob is a qualified accountant and company secretary.


Andrew Faichney
Head of High Performance Systems

Andrew Faichney is the Head of High Performance Systems leading the Athletics Australia High Performance program with Christian Malcolm. Andrew has previously managed the very successful Athletics Australia Paralympic Program to two Paralympic Games, London 2012 and Rio 2016. Andrew was also the Head of Delegation for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Athletics team.

Prior to this stint at Athletics Australia, Andrew has worked at the International Cricket Council overseeing the East-Asia/Pacific Regional office and as Event Manager for the qualification process for the ICC World Cup competitions. Andrew was also the Athletics Competition Manager for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Before Melbourne 2006, Andrew started his working career at Athletics Australia working as a Development Officer and Assistant Competitions Manager.

Michelle James
Manager – Sport Delivery

Michelle James is AA’s experienced National Competitions Manager, having spent 6 years in this role. Prior to this she was the Competitions Manager for Athletics Victoria, meaning she has a wealth of experience in the competitions space. Her sporting background continues with her time working at the Gymnastics & Sports Department at the University of Ballarat.


David King
General Manager, Commercial

David has over 25 years’ experience in the sporting industry leading and managing commercial teams at Collingwood Football Club, Hawthorn Football Club and Moonee Valley Racing Club.

As a senior executive, he has played a leading role initiating and driving the development and implementation of commercial and business strategy in the highly competitive sporting market.
