International Competition Permit

This section of the Athletics Australia website has information pertaining to competing at events hosted on international soil. You will find details about how you apply for an International Competition Permit as required under IAAF Rule 4 (and where you should apply), as well as details on travel insurance.

For more information, please contact the Athletics Australia High Performance Department on (03) 8646 4550.

As per IAAF Rule 4, Australian athletes competing overseas require a permit from Athletics Australia to compete. This includes all levels of athletes competing in any level of competition, including athletes on scholarship with a foreign university. A Meet Organiser or foreign university should not allow an athlete without a written permit to compete.

An athlete competing overseas without a permit is not covered by any of Athletics Australia's insurance policies. Please refer to the section on Travel Insurance when competing overseas for more details.

It was recommended for 2005 and beyond that performances achieved by an athlete competing overseas without a permit will not be recognised by Athletics Australia, including for the purpose of qualifying for a team, SIS/SAS scholarship etc and any record set would also not be recognisable.

HOW TO GET A PERMIT

If you are a member of an official Athletics Australia Team, or are receiving support from Athletics Australia to compete overseas in preparation for an international team you DO NOT need to apply for a permit.

However, you do need to provide to the Head Coach your competition schedule and any changes to this schedule as they arise. You must also provide your current training location information. You must be currently registered with a Member Association and be in good standing (i.e. do not owe the Association money, are not under suspension for any reason etc). Until this is done, the permit is not considered to be in place.

If you DID NOT qualify for the Australian Athletics 'Open' Championships (i.e. meet the Open Qualifying standards) this season you MUST complete an International Permit Application and submit it to your Member Association. They will issue you with a permit if you are a currently registered athlete and of good standing (i.e. do not owe the Association money, are not under suspension for any reason etc).

If you DID qualify for the Australian Athletics 'Open' Championships this season you MUST complete an International Permit Application and submit it to Athletics Australia. For a permit to be issued you will need to be currently registered with a Member Association and be in good standing (i.e. do not owe the Association money, are not under suspension for any reason etc).
