Running
Australia
Running Australia is a national network
developed to bring events within the running industry under a
collaborative network. The simple nature of the sport has resulted
in a complex industry made up of a vast number of running events of
various sizes and intentions.
Running Australia aims to bring a level of professionalism across the sport by encouraging organisers to focus on quality management. The ultimate aim of Running Australia is to develop a structure for the industry that supports, and more effectively services, the millions of Australians participating in healthy, fun and organised physical activity via fun runs.
As the national governing body of athletics,
Athletics Australia has historically concentrated on traditional
track and field. Following a major organisational re-structure in
2000, Athletics Australia has expanded its focus to include the out
of stadium road running and community fun run industry.
Running is a key participation sport and is at he front line of the
federal government's approach to fighting obesity. 25% of all
Australians and 39% of 16 to 29 year olds run recreationally,
providing a massive market and growth potential for the
program.
Running Australia is a powerful medium reaching recreational and
competitive runners across Australia with a current national
database of over 100,000 participants.
Larger events such as the Melbourne Marathon, Perth City to Surf,
City-Bay Fun Run (Adelaide), Sydney Running Festival, Canberra
Marathon, Skilled Burnie Ten (Tasmania) and the Gold Coast Marathon
have a large presence in their cities and advertise both nationally
and internationally for participants. The network also
extends to smaller local events both in the cities and regionally,
providing broad coverage throughout the community nationally.
