36th IAAF World Cross Country Championships
Edinburgh, Great Britain
Held annually, the World Cross Country Championships have a rich history, pitting the globe’s best terrain runners in often arduous conditions.
Australia’s history at the world cross is enviable, too.
Steve Moneghetti competed at 11 editions of the meet while
Benita Johnson is the country’s sole gold medallist after her triumph in the long course in 2004.
Johnson,
Melissa Rollison,
Anna Thompson,
Donna MacFarlane,
Victoria Mitchell and
Eloise Wellings claimed an historic team bronze medal in Fukuoka, Japan in 2006.
In 2007, the World Cross Country Championships were held in oppressive heat at the home of distance running - Kenya. Australia sent a team of 18, for which Thompson was the best performer.
