The best athletes from 212 countries will come together in Japan in August 2007 for the world’s third biggest sporting event, the 11th IAAF World Championships in Athletics. The second time the Championships have been hosted by Japan, after Tokyo in 1991, Osaka’s Nagai Stadium will host the track and field events.
The IAAF World Championships in Athletics began in 1983 in Helsinki and were originally held every four years, however, after Tokyo 1991 this changed to every two years. One of the world's three great sporting events, alongside the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, Osaka 2007 will see 3200 athletes and officials participate in competition watched by over 4 billion viewers in 200 countries.
Australia has competed at all World Championships and Australian athletes have had many memorable performances, led by Robert de Castella’s unforgettable marathon win at the first edition in Helsinki 1983. Catherine Freeman won Australia’s first back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1999 in the 400m on her way to Olympic glory in Sydney in 2000.
Dmitri Markov leaped to gold in Canada in 2001 winning the pole vault, while Jana Pittman shot to national fame with her 400m hurdles title in Paris during the 2003 championships.
When the championships returned to Helsinki in 2005, Craig Mottram become the first non-African in 15 years to win a distance medal, taking bronze in the 5000m and announcing himself to the world as a challenger to the African dominance of distance running.
In 2007, the Osaka World Championships will be beamed into Australian homes by SBS each evening, giving Australians the opportunity to watch the athletes who dominated the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and 2006/2007 Australian domestic season, take on the world.
