Athletics Victoria's winter series starts with record numbers
Beautiful weather greeted competitors for the opening of the 2007 AV Winter Series - the Cross-Country Relays in the picturesque surroundings of Jells Park. With 910 runners taking part, this was the largest opening round of the Winter series on record, with all participants enjoying a good level of teams competition.
Men’s Division 1 was won by the powerful Geelong team brought home by Olympian Lee Troop in 1:49.54. Doncaster finished 2nd some 3 minutes adrift, with the youthful Box Hill team placing 3rd.
Collis Birmingham (EKA) ran the fastest 6km leg in 17.30 from the Geelong runners Mark Tucker 17.39 and Troop 17.49 with the ‘grand master’ of distance running Steve Moneghetti (BYC) 4th fastest in 18.10 just ahead of World Cross-Country rep David McNeill.
Women’s Division 1 was won by Knox in 1:29.49 ahead of the fast finishing Sandringham and Glenhuntly in 3rd. The fastest 3km leg was run by former Commonwealth rep Susie Power (GHY) in 20.26 from Sarah Lofts (KNA) 21.26, Anna Worland (EKA) 21.28, Kate Seibold-Crosbie (SAN) 21.30 and Lee Furst (KNA) 21.46.

The junior events saw some great racing. The Under 20 Women was won by Frankston in 33.06, lead by Rachel Green with the fastest time of 10.03 whilst the Under 20 Men were won by Knox in 59.54 with Sam Crowther running an impressive 18.36. Both Green and Crowther were recent Australian representatives at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombassa, Kenya.
Doncaster took out the Under 18 Women’s title in 32.06. Elise Clayton (FKN) recorded the fastest time with a 10.02 whilst the Men were won by Williamstown in 29.40 with David Ireland (KSB) the fastest in 9.28.
The Under 16 Women was won by Athletics Essendon in 34.36, including Danielle Baulch who posted the fastest time of 11.25. Athletics Essendon also took out
the Under 18 Men’s competition, in what proved to a be a very strong day for their junior squad, with a winning time of 30.38. Knox Athletics’ Jordan Nelson produced
the best time amongst the boys with a 9.52 for the 3km lap.
The Under 14 Women was also won by Essendon in 34.08 with Erin Rayner (ATE) the fastest in 11.02. And to complete a sweep of the younger divisions, Athletics Essendon won the Under 14 Men in 31.49 with team member Luke Mathews the fastest in 10.20.
The winter action moves to La Trobe University in Bundoora on Sunday May 13th. Senior athletes can look forward to an undulating 3 laps of the University as their 15km course, whilst the juniors will take to the roads for one lap of 5km. Keep checking www.athsvic.org.au for event updates.
And news from abroad…Whilst the winter season is in progress here, some of our athletes are overseas and performing well.
The weekend of the 21st of April saw David Ruschena (GHY) run 14.13.67 for 5000m at Eugene, USA for 8th place. At the same venue Madeleine Pape (AWA) was 2nd in the 800 metres in 2.03.86 and Lisa-Jane Weightman (PTN) ran a PB 5,000 metres in 15.54.31 for 4th place.
Other performances in the USA were recorded on the same weekend. At College Park by Andrew Krumins (OSC) placed 4th in the 800 metres in 1.50.00, whilst in Alamosa Michael Gusbeth (DKN) won the Hammer with 61.09m and was 2nd in the Discus with 46.52m.
In Fayetteville Mark Fountain (DKN) was 5th in the 800 metres in 1.48.69 whilst wife Erica Sigmont (GHY) won her 800 metres in 2.06.72.
In Nashville Anneli Uys (FKN) was 7th in the 1,500 metres in 4.34.59.
Results coming in from this weekend show Craig Mottram (DKN) winning an 8.7km road race in Luzern, Switzerland in 24.53 with Victoria Mitchell (EKA) finishing 3rd in 13.26 in the women’s 4.25km race.
The Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitation at Stanford, USA saw Madeleine Pape (AWA) winning the 800 metres in a PB 2.01.17 with Georgie Clarke (GLG) finishing 8th in the 1,500 metres in 4.16.63.
The next big International meet for Australian athletes is in Shizuoka, Japan later today where Jeff Riseley (KNA) will contest the 1,500 metres. On May 1 Jared Tallent (BYC) will compete in the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Milan, Italy.
