Fearnley takes New York, again
Australian wheelchair champion
Kurt Fearnley’s remarkable ascension has continued, successfully defending his ING New York Marathon title on Sunday.
The 26 year-old powered to the finish in 1:33.58, just over a minute ahead of South African Krige Schabort and a little over four minutes outside his course record time of 1:29.22. Japan’s Soejima Masazumi was third.
This year’s win was as clinical as last year’s was remarkable. The New York crowd who witnessed Fearnley's triumph in 2006, after being thrown from his chair, again savoured the dominance of the Paralympic gold medallist.
“That was hard work,” he said post-race. “The last 10km really hurt and I just kept thinking, keep going, just keep going. To win here once is amazing, twice is just unforgettable.”
The win was sweetened with Fearnley’s mother, Jackie, able to enjoy the experience first-hand.
“It's not very often that I get to race with either of my parents in the crowd, so it's great to win with mum here,” he said. “Last year I got to bring dad over and managed to show him the sights from the back of the winner's limo, so to repeat it for mum is just great.”
The Big Apple event concludes Fearnley’s sensational 2007 campaign which has showcased 10 marathon wins from 11 starts and two world champion crowns over 1500m (Osaka - pictured) and 10km (Peachtree, Atlanta).
The turn of the calendar year will see Fearnley’s sights switch to the Paralympic Games in Beijing, though the New York Marathon will no doubt become a regular bookend.
“I definitely won't be trying to repeat this year's program in 2008,” he confirmed. “I haven't finalised my calendar, but it will be lighter than this year, everything will revolve around Beijing.
“I won't be partying too hard after Beijing because New York will be on the program for sure. I love everything about the race, the city, the crowd, the competition, there's nothing else like it.”
