Canberra to continue tradition
Following Friday’s Briggs Athletics Classic in Hobart, Australian athletes will switch their focus to the nation’s capital for the Canberra Athletics Classic on January 26 and 27.
Formerly branded as an A-Series meet, this edition will be hosted by Athletics ACT but should continue its tradition of accommodating strong performances from the cream of Australia’s athletes.
“Canberra has always been a popular meet for Australian athletes as we know how to put on a good competition and good conditions,” said Athletics ACT president Michael Thomson. “With the Olympics just around the corner, athletes are just starting their preparation and we expect to see a large number of them in action.”
The Canberra track is recognised as a fast track and, accordingly, the focus of events scheduled for Canberra are the speed and explosive events.
The Classic kicks off on Saturday, January 26 at 3pm and concludes at 6pm, before an early start (7:30am) on Sunday with a 20km walk along the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.
To conclude, a final session will be held at the AIS Athletics Track where Australia will do battle against a number of international teams in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays and seated throwing for athletes with a disability.
With an IAAF permit status, the Canberra Athletics Classic provides nations with an opportunity to record relay qualifying performances; only 16 teams are invited to compete in each relay at the Olympics, so each is very conscious of their international ranking.
Canberra will also have a large number of events for athletes with a disability as they prepare for the Beijing Paralympics; a significant group of AWD world champions and world record holders will be in action.
This year’s Classic is already expecting competitors from New Zealand, Denmark, Canada, South Africa, England, Fiji, Korea and Papua and New Guinea and Athletics Australia continues to negotiate with several other countries to bring their relay teams to Canberra.
