Distance runners from across Australia converge on Sandown Raceway

Distance runners from across Australia are set to converge on Sandown Raceway this weekend, to compete in the Skins Sandown Classic, Australia’s most competitive 10km road race.

With a $10,000 prize pool up for grabs, the competition is expected to be fierce.

The Skins Sandown Classic will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday 17th May at Sandown Raceway, Springvale.

Amongst the men, the favourites are:

Lee Troop (Geelong). Troop is waiting to hear whether he has been selected for a third consecutive Olympic Games marathon. He won this event in 2006. With a 10km personal best of 27 minutes, 51 seconds, Troop will be tough to beat.

Michael Shelley (Queensland). Shelley is the defending champion (with a winning time of 29:21min in 2007) and an emerging star who represented Australia in the 2007 and 2008 World Cross Country Championships. Shelley is expected to give Troop a good battle.

Liam Adams (Athletics Essendon). Adams finished 5th at Sandown last year in a time of 29:47min. He ran 13:52min for 5000m in Sydney earlier this year and represented Australia at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships.

Ben St Lawrence (NSW). St Lawrence finished seventh at the  Sandown Classic in 2007, with a time of 29:58min. He ran 13:56min for 5000m earlier this year and represented Australia in the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh.

Chris Hamer (Box Hill). Hamer is a rising star who finished second in the Under 20 Category at Sandown last year in a time of 30:56min. He has continued to improve this year in the open category, finishing 2nd in the recent Victorian Cross Country Championships, just behind Lee Troop.

Tim Rowe (NSW). Rowe is an up and comer from NSW who is set for a breakthrough performance at Sandown. He has run 14:19min for 5000m and impressed at the recent Australian Cross Country Selection trial in Canberra, finishing 7th in a very competitive field.

Marcus Brown (QLD). Brown finished 8th in the 2008 National 5000m Championship in a time of 14:33min. He is hoping for a sub-30 minute time at Sandown.

The competition amongst the women will be just as hot. The favourites include:

Lara Tamsett (NSW). Tamsett is one of Australia’s rising stars. She is the 2007 World Junior Mountain Running Champion and reigning Australian Under 23 5000m Champion (which she won in 16:08min).

Tara Palm (SA). Palm had a breakthrough performance at Sandown in 2007, finishing 3rd in 34:25min, and is looking to improve on that result in 2008. She finished 3rd in the 2007 Zatopek 10,000m, which doubled as the National Championship, and has represented Australia in the 2007 Chiba Ekiden Relay in Japan.

Renate Wyss (Melbourne Uni). Wyss is a Swiss runner currently studying in Melbourne. She is the 2007 Under 23 Swiss National Champion over 1500m. She finished 9th in the 2008 Australian Cross Country Selection trial in Canberra, and was a convincing winner in the recent Victorian Cross Country Championships in Gippsland.

Rowan Baird (New Zealand). Baird finished 2nd in the 2008 New Zealand 5000m Championship in a time of 16:09min.

The male and female winner of the 10km race will take home $750, as well as Skins products.  Performance incentives of up to $1000 per athlete are also payable.

As well as Australia’s elite, the Skins Sandown Classic will play host to runners of all ages and ability from across Victoria and Australia.

Athletics Victoria CEO Nick Honey said that the event was increasing in popularity as runners realised the Skins Sandown Classic was the perfect opportunity to run a 10km PB on a fast, flat, certified-accurate course.

“I strongly encourage runners of all ages and abilities to take the opportunity to compete alongside Australia’s best in one of the best 10km events in Australia,” Mr Honey said.

“The Skins Sandown Classic also incorporates an earlier 3km race, enabling junior runners to join in the fun as well.”
