For its 21st birthday The World Athletics Tour Melbourne turned on not only a balmy still summer evening, but an electrifying night on the track and field. The build up was intense and the big Olympic Park crowd were waiting on to see if Asafa Powell would take to the track. He did, joining Olympic Champion Jeremy Wariner, and a host of Australian stars in one big night of athletics. See Powell’s meet record, Tamsyn Lewis’ Olympic A qualifying performance and personal best in the 400m and hometown behemoth Scott Martin smash the Oceania and Australian shot put record.
The Selection Trials and 86th Australian Championships served up three huge days of athletics action, with much on the line the very best Aussie athletes knew they had to bring their A game, and did. Little – known Indigenous sprinter, Otis Gowa charged home to take the 100m title and Alana Boyd, Tamsyn Lewis, Donna MacFarlane, Dani Samuels and Kylie Wheeler guaranteed themselves a place on the plane to Beijing. The star of the show was undoubtedly Jarrod Bannister who, on the last throw of the competition, sent the javelin 89.02m smashing his personal best and the Australian and Oceania records, and booking himself a spot in Beijing.
