Interesting Facts
A local soccer player in his native Nigeria, Anthony started
running when an athletics coach spectating at one of his soccer
games commended his speed with the ball and invited him to start
sprint training. Anthony and the coach kept in contact and, after a
while, “he made me realise that I have so much talent in running
and from then on my dream was to be a superstar and a role model in
track and field,” Anthony says.
Sporting Career
2004 – Anthony represented Nigeria at the world junior
championships, making it to the semi-finals of the 100m in a time
of 10.56.
2006 – Selected to represent his African homeland at the Melbourne
Commonwealth Games, running the first leg of the 4x100m relay.
Following the Games Anthony decided to remain in Australia to
further his athletics career.
2007 – Competed at his first Australian championships, running a
personal best time of 10.24 to qualify for the 100m final but
succumbed to injury before the race.
2008 – Finished second in the B race in a season’s best time of
10.56 at the World Athletics Tour Melbourne before placing seventh
at the national championships in a time of 10.8.
2009 – After a strong start to the year, including a wind-assisted
time of 10.16 (+2.7) in Canberra in January, Anthony again ran into
injury trouble throughout the domestic season, failing to finish
the 100m final at the national championships in Brisbane in
March.
At his first world championships in August Anthony joined teammates
Matt Davies, Josh Ross and Aaron Rouge-Serret in placing third in
their heat of the 4x100m relay, their season’s best time of 38.93
not enough to advance to the deciding round.
