Interesting Facts
Collis made his first State cross-country team at under-10s. However, his first State title was produced at Little Athletics under-9s - in the high jump with a height of 1.24m.
He recently moved to Melbourne after spending 13 years in Ballarat and has commenced a commerce degree at university.
Sporting Career
In 2003, Collis competed as a junior at the World Cross Country Championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
In the years that followed, Collis’ focus spread to the middle distances and in 2005 he finished seventh in the open men’s Australian Championships of the 1500m. That year he improved his 1500m PB by six seconds and, in 2006, he took to his 5000m standard in similar fashion.
Strong National Championship performances over both distances saw Collis finish second in the 1500m and third in the 5000m in 2006 while a win in the Burnie Ten in October and his part in the fifth-placed Ekiden Japan relay team heightened a successful year.
Collis’ 2006-07 domestic season was solid, highlighted by a second place in the 1500m at the Zatopek Classic and a win in personal best time at the Briggs Athletics Classic in Hobart over 5000m. Running 7.46.01 for third place in the 3000m at the Telstra A Series in Sydney saw Collis climbed to number 8 on the Australian All time list for the distance. He represented Australia at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa, Kenya, finishing 67th, and between various road races on home soil embarked on an inaugural European campaign.
Two wins over 1500m in the UK and a new PB in a fast field at the Norwich Union Grand Prix IAAF World Tour meet, dipping under 3min 40sec for the first time.
2007 concluded stunningly with a win in the 10,000m Championships at the Telstra Zatopek Classic in Melbourne. It was Collis’ track debut over the distance.
2008 on the track began well for Collis, with a gutsy third placing over 1500m at the Sydney Athletics Grand Prix which produced a personal best of 3.37.88, then a personal best over 5000m a week later at the IAAF WAT meeting in Melbourne, which also gave him a silver medal in the Australian Championships. After a stellar performance at the Mt SAC Relays in California that saw the 23 year old sneak under the A standard in a PB time of 13:21.12 for the 5000 metres, Collis has been chosen for nomination to the Australian Olympic Committee for selection into the Australian team for the 2008 Olympic Games.
