Interesting Facts
Collis made his first state cross country team at Under 10's
but his first state title was produced at Little Athletics, winning
the Under 9 high jump with a height of 1.24m.
Collis moved to Melbourne after spending 13 years in Ballarat
(regional Victoria) and has commenced a commerce degree at
university.
Sporting Career
2003 - Competed as a Jjunior at the world cross country
championships in Lausanne, Switzerland.
2005 - Finished seventh at the national championships in the 1500m
and improved his PB in that event by six seconds.
2006 - Placed second over 1500m and third over 5000m at the
national championships. Won the Burnie Ten and helped the Chiba
Ekiden relay team to fifth.
2007 - Posted a second place over 1500m at the Zatopek Classic and
victory over 5000m in a PB time at the Briggs Athletic Classic in
Hobart. A third place in the 3000m at the national series meet in
Sydney in 7:46.01 saw Collis climb to No. 8 on the Australian
all-time list for the distance.
Later in the year Collis represented Australia at the world cross
country championships in Mombassa, Kenya, finishing 67th. Between
various road races on home soil he embarked on on an inaugural
European campaign, posting two wins over 1500m in the UK and a new
PB at the Norwich Union Grand Prix IAAF Tour meet, dipping under
3:40.00 for the first time.
In December Collis won the 10,000m national championship race at
Melbourne's Zatopek Classic on his debut over the
distance.
2008 - Finished third over 1500m at the national series meet in
Sydney, running a personal best time of 3:37.88. A personal best
over 5000m followed just one week later at the IAAF tour meet in
Melbourne, finishing second in the Australian championship
race.
He posted another 5000m PB at the Mt SAC relays in California
(13:21.12) before gaining selection to the Olympic Games. In his
debut at the Olympics, Collis ran in the first of three men's
5000m heats, placing 10th in 13:44.90.
2009 - In one the most impressive years of hi career to date,
Collis posted new personal best times over 1500m, the mile, 5000m
and 10,000. At the Sydney Track Classic in February Collis shaved
.87 off his previous personal best of 3:37.01 but it was his
10,000m, stopping the clock at 27.29.73 to surpass previous record
holder Shaun Creighton on the all-time list.
In July Collis recorded another personal best and the
second-fastest run by an Australian over 5000m of all time,
completing the distance in 13:14.53 in Oslo to move to second
behind fellow Victorian Craig Mottram (12:55.76) on the all-time
list. Later that month he lowered his lifetime best over the mile
to 3:54.30.
Taking on the 5000m/10,000m double at the August's world
championships in Berlin, Collis withdrew from the 10,000m event at
the 8000m-mark of the race before going on to finish 16th over
5000m, stopping the clock at 13:55.58.
