Interesting Facts

Darren has cerebral palsy caused by a car accident. He most admires Wally Lewis and people who give 100 per cent regardless of the obstacles. His nickname is ‘Laces’ and he enjoys watching other sports and competing. He has been awarded an Order of Australia medal and an Australian Sports Medal. He was named Maranoa District Sportsman of the Century and the Darling Downs Sportsman of the Year.

Sporting Career

DISABILITY CLASSIFICATION: T37/F37 Cerebral Palsy (Moderate to minimal hemiplegia)


A stalwart of the AWD program he first had success at the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona. In 2001 he was reclassified from T38 to T37 and set a new world record in the long jump in Brisbane. He won relay gold in the Sydney Paralympics and the 2002 IPC World Championships. He medalled in the FESPIC Games in 2002 and won relay gold in the Athens Paralympics and was 3rd in the 100m. Darren won gold in the long jump and 4x100m at the 2006 IPC Championships in Assen.
