 Jarrod Bannister

Jarrod Bannister

Jarrod threw a monster 89.02m, to catapult him to the Australian record and remained the world leading thrower well past the midway point of 2008. That throw won him the Australian title and Olympic selection for Beijing.

In the final of the Olympic Games Jarrod opened his account with a throw of 83.45m, then on his third throw suffered an injury to his elbow and was unable to continue in the competition. The throw of 83.45m would be enough to secure 6th place, the highest place and best throw ever by an Australian at an Olympic Games.

Jarrod and former coach Garry Calvert reassessed his coaching situation and Bannister made contact with legend Uwe Hohn, the East German giant who launched the javelin 104.80m in 1984 and caused the IAAF to redesign the implement to alter its flight path for the safety of other stadium users.

Bannister and Hohn began working together in late April in Canberra before travelling to Europe prior to Jarrod’s Olympic debut in August. In a rain-disrupted qualifying round the debutant qualified for the final with a throw of 79.79m. In the final Jarrod opened his account with a throw of 83.45m, then on his third throw suffered an injury to his elbow and was unable to continue in the competition. The throw of 83.45m was enough to secure sixth, the highest place and best throw ever by an Australian at an Olympic Games.

2009 – Injury ruled Jarrod out of action for much of 2009, the Queenslander still recovering from the damage sustained to his elbow at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Interesting Facts

Jarrod was born in Townsville, North Queensland. He moved to Melbourne in early 2006 to train with then coach Garry Calvert in preparation for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

His sister Helaina trains on the Gold Coast under Sharon Hannan and alongside Sally McLellan and competes at a national level.

Sporting Career

2002 – Finished fourth in the javelin throw at the world junior championships in Kingston, Jamaica.

2006 – Moved to Victoria and improved his PB to 77.11m then threw 76.17m at the nationals, gaining selection for the Commonwealth Games. At the Games he threw a personal best 78.06m to finish sixth.

2007 – A new PB of 83.70m and his first national senior title was followed by selection for the Osaka world championships. In drizzly conditions in Osaka he threw 77.57m and didn’t progress to the final.

2008 – Jarrod threw consistently though hampered by minor injuries. At the national championships, realising he had won the competition and would be an automatic nomination for the Beijing Olympics, he had nothing to lose and charged up the runway to throw the javelin a massive 89.02m, over five metres more than his previous best.
