A late starter to distance running, Kate burst onto the scene as a 25 year old in 2003, being selected in the Australian team for the Ekiden Relays. 2003 also brought impressive performances over the marathon distance, as Kate finished 8th in the Rotterdam Marathon and 20th in the Nagoya Marathon.
Then in 2004 and continuing to improve, Kate won the Noosa Half Marathon. A remarkable talent was emerging in the distance community. Kate would travel to New Zealand in 2005 to contest the 10000 metres title, a race she would win in a time of 34.12.16.
