Liam has been very successful at both the underage and open national championships to date.
He competed at the 2005 World Youth Championships where he did not make the final, however, in 2006 he finished equal ninth in the World Juniors in Beijing after equalling his personal best in the qualifying round.
Liam was then selected in the Oceania team for the World Cup, were he suffered from food poisoning but still managed to get out of bed to compete.
In 2007, he won his first open nationals aged 18 and competed at the World University Games and finished in ninth place.
