Martin compiled an excellent junior career in distance running under the guidance of Newcastle-based coach David Rundle and alongside training partners Wayne Bristow and Clinton Mackevicius. He won three Australian junior steeplechase titles, competed at two world junior championships and two world junior cross country championships.

1999 – Made his senior international debut when he competed at the World University Games and senior world cross country championships. Martin just missed selection in the steeplechase for the Sydney 2000 Olympics and graduated to the 10,000m and marathon soon after.

2005 – Martin won the Australian cross country title.

2006 – Martin returned to the steeplechase and finished second at the Canberra meet in 8:42.09 and second at the nationals in a PB of 8:29.98 to secure selection for the Commonwealth Games.

Finished a strong fourth to a Kenyan trifecta at Melbourne 2006, posting a new personal best time of 8:28.98. A week later Martin ran both the short and long course events at the world cross country championships in Fukuoka, Japan finishing 42nd and 45th respectively. In October he was the only Australian male to compete in the IAAF world road running championships in Debrecen, Hungary, finishing 45th.

2007 – Martin opened with a win over 5000m at the Ron Clarke Classic and a second place in the 3000m steeplechase at the Zatopek Classic. He won the same event at the national series meet in Canberra before finishing second in Sydney in personal best time and contesting the 5000m championships at the national series meet in Melbourne, finishing fifth.

Martin undertook the 3000m/3000m steeplechase double at the Australian championships in March, finishing fourth and second respectively in the two events.

2008 – In a huge year Martin finished second in the Zatopek 10,000m, won the Sydney Grand Prix steeplechase (8:27.00), was third Australian in the Melbourne Grand Prix 5000m (13:41.78) and won the national steeplechase title (8:34.34).

During the winter season Martin won a number of major road races, highlighted with his win in the Sydney City to Surf, the first Australian in 11 years to achieve the feat. Martin also won the Australian cross country championships for the second time.
