Interesting Facts

Matt played soccer all through school before starting running due to knee injuries sustained in his last years of secondary school. He started serious sprint training only after leaving school. After a two-year absence from the sport in 2006 and 2007 Matt made a return to the athletics scene. Matt’s nickname is ‘BoyBand’ thanks to his resemblance to the lead singer in a typical boy band.

Sporting Career

2008 – Returning to the sport after a two-year absence, Matt placed second at the Australia Cup meet in a time of 10.43 then took out the 100m B race at the World Athletics Tour Melbourne, crossing the line in 10.50. He placed fifth in his semi-final of the 100m (10.76), enjoying greater success in the 200m event where he placed second of the Australians in 21.48.

2009 – Matt placed second over 100m in Sydney in a new personal best time of 10.37, then fifth at the World Athletics Tour Melbourne (10.59) in a field that featured Jamaican duo Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter. At the national championships in March he placed fourth (third Australian) in 10.45, going on to finish second over 200m in 21.17. Just days later Matt recorded a new personal best over 200m, running 20.77 in Canberra.

Competing as part of the 4x100m relay team at the Osaka Grand Prix in May, Davies joined Josh Ross, Chris Noffke and Daniel Martin in placing second to Japan in a time of 39.32.

In London Matt teamed with Anthony Alozie, Josh Ross and Aaron Rouge-Serret to placed sixth in 39.37 in a race that saw Usain Bolt and his Racers TC teammates win in 37.46, the fourth fastest time ever. At the world championships in Berlin in August Matt’s 4x100m relay team placed third in its heat in a season’s best time of 38.93, missing out on a berth in the final by just one place.
