Sporting Career
2004 – Won the 400 metres at the Commonwealth Youth Games in
Bendigo and anchored the winning Australian relay team. A month
later he won the All-Schools 400m hurdles.
2006 – Awarded an AIS scholarship. He finished second in the
nationals in a personal best time 50.25 and was selected for the
Commonwealth Games where he lowered his PB to 49.88 in his heat and
just missed the final after coming fifth in his semi. Tristan
represented Oceania in the World Cup in Athens and finished seventh
in the 400m hurdles and ran the opening leg of the 4x400m
relay.
2008 – Thomas set a new personal best (49.85), breaking 50 seconds
for the first time, at the Good Luck Beijing Olympic test
event.
2009 – Tristan’s year to date has been one of the most impressive
by any Australian athlete bound for Berlin. Across a stellar
domestic season Thomas produced 11 personal bests over 100m, 200m,
400m, 400m hurdles and 800m. He lowered his lifetime best in the
400m hurdles event to 48.86 in Sydney – the second-fastest time
ever by an Australian – and defeated Olympic bronze medallist
Bershawn Jackson in the process, before claiming back-to-back
victories in the 400m hurdles at the national titles in March. At
the Osaka Grand Prix in May Tristan’s ominous form continued,
slicing 0.18 seconds off the personal best he recorded in Sydney to
place second in 48.68, just 0.08 behind reigning world champion and
Beijing silver medallist Kerron Clement (USA), Tristan recording
what was then the third-fastest time in the world this year. In
Belgrade, Serbia, in July Tristan took out the 400m hurdles at the
World University Games, clocking the second fastest-time of his
career to cross the line in 48.75, just 0.07 off his personal
best.
