Effective coaching is a sustainable competitive advantage in athletics. Coaching makes a qualitative difference because better coaching equates to better performance and a more professional sport.
The High Performance program will initiate the first stages of a professional coaching community in 2010.
This process will lead to improved coaching and an improved coaching environment that integrates with all high performance key stakeholders, including: Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), State Institutes of Sport (SIS), State Academies of Sport (SAS), Athletics Australia, Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association (AT&FCA).
To effect a change in coaching culture, there is a need for the High Performance program to recognise the primacy of the athlete/coach relationship by recognising and supporting both professional and volunteer coaches.
Merit-based support of coaches in the elite athlete pathway is fundamental to maintaining and enhancing the athlete/coach relationship. Merit–based support is based primarily on the performances of the coach’s current athletes, and the coach’s involvement in mentoring and training other coaches.
