• Shirvo Closes On Games 100m Qualifier
  Matt Shirvington completed his first 100m race since the lead-up to the 2005 Helsinki World Championships and demonstrated that the he remains a contender for a 100m spot at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Racing in interclub competition at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra last night, the five-time national 100m champion ran the 100m twice in a bid to record a Commonwealth Games qualifying time. In the opening race he clocked 10.43sec and followed up 20 minutes later with a wind assisted (+3.5mps) 10.28sec.

  After three years on the mainland, the National Athletics Circuit returns to Tasmania tomorrow, with the staging of the Tasmania’s Forest Industries Graeme Briggs Memorial Track Classic at the Domain Athletics Centre in Hobart. Heading the star cast are 2004 Olympic Games walk bronze medallist, Jane Saville, and Craig Mottram, who achieved the same feat over 5000 metres at this year’s World Championships in Helsinki.

  After an injury plagued two years, 2003 world champion Jana Pittman will return to competition at the opening event of the 2006 Telstra A-series in Canberra next Thursday. Pittman, whose hopes of Olympic gold in 2004 were cruelled by a knee injury and her defense of her world title in Helsinki scuppered by a stress fracture in her back, will race over the 400m hurdles for the first time since the Golden League meeting in Rome in early July last year.

• Telstra A-series kicks off Thursday in Canberra
  Many of Australia’s Commonwealth Games hopefuls had a final tune-up for Thursday’s Telstra A-series opener in Canberra, producing some solid performances at the Queensland Championship over the weekend. The star was 19 year-old Sally McLellan who collected a sprint treble in the 100m, 200m and 100m hurdles. It was the first time since women's events were introduced at the Queensland championships in 1929 that a woman has won the all three titles at the one championship.
