  • National Youth Event Coaches Appointed
    Athletics Australia announced the appointment of National Youth Event Coaches (NYEC) who will join with Glynis Nunn-Cearns as National Youth Coaching Co-ordinator in developing Australia's brightest young athletic talent. These highly sought after positions are very important in the youth development pathway and will be a great support to Sara Mulkearns and Rohan Robinson from the High Performance team at Athletics Australia.
  • Rohan Robinson Joins the Youth Development Program
    Olympic Finalist and Australian 400m hurdle record holder Rohan Robinson has officially joined the Youth Development program. He will work alongside National Youth Performance Manager Sara Mulkearns at Athletics Australia whilst continuing his involvement with ASADA.

    The largest ever Australian athletics team will take on the best athletes in the Commonwealth at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March following the announcement of a 123 strong team today.
  • Scott Martin Second in Netherlands WAT Shot Put
    Scott Martin has continued to perform strongly in Eurpoe, finishing second on the weekend in the Shot Put at the Hangelo World Athletics Tour Meet in the Netherlands. The sole non-European in the field, Martin threw 20.25m to continue the good form he has shown to date on his northern hemisphere tour.
  • Benita Johnson Wins Freihofer's Run For Women in New York
    Albany, NY (June 3, 2006) — Before the gun fired for the start of the 28th running of the Freihofer's Run for Women 5K in downtown Albany, NY, the consensus was that this was Lornah Kiplagat's race to lose. The 32-year-old Kenyan-born Dutchwoman had proved dominant in almost every race she had run this year, and had taken a silver medal at the super-competitive World Cross Country Championships 8K in Japan in March. At the tape, however, it was Australia's former World Champion Benita Johnson who prevailed, her win coming as the culmination of one of the most thrilling competitions in the history of this celebrated road race.

    NEW YORK - Although sprinters are known for relishing hot and dry conditions, the cool and wet conditions Saturday at the Reebok Grand Prix did nothing to dampen the excitement of the meet's shortest races. And it seemed to do plenty to make a sprinter out of Meseret Defar in the women's 5,000 meters.

  • An interview with Benita Johnson prior to NY 10km
    Benita Johnson of Australia, the 2004 World Cross Country 8k champ, will run the Circle of Friends New York Mini 10K in Central Park on Saturday. She was third in the Mini in 2005. Johnson won the rain-drenched Freihofer's 5K Run for Women in Albany last Saturday by two seconds over Natalya Berkut of Ukraine with a 15:27. Berkut is also racing in the New York Mini. Johnson was fourth in the 2006 World Cross Country Championships in Osaka, Japan in both the 4k and 8k races, helping Australia earn a team bronze in the 4k. Her other 2006 road race results include a fourth place in the Great Manchester Run 10K in England in an Australian national record 31:17, a second at the Crescent City Classic in 31:28, a fourth in the Carlsbad 5000 in 15:19, and a third in the Lilac Bloomsday 12K in 39:04. She was sixth at the 2005 Flora London Marathon in 2:26:32. She has personal bests of 14:47.60 for 5000 meters and 30.37.68 for 10,000 on the track. Now 27, Johnson is a former international junior field hockey competitor for Australia.
  • Creighton to Leave Role as National Event Co-ordinator - Distance
    Athletics Australia National Event Co-ordinator - Distance, Shaun Creighton, has today announced that he will leave the role to take up a partnership with a legal firm in Canberra. Creighton was appointed to the newly created role in late 2005 and has had a major impact on the development of the National High Performance Centre - Distance at the Victorian Institute of Sport.

    Benita Johnson finished second in the 4mile Steamboat Classic in her final race of her US tour in Peoria, Illinois over the weekend. Johnson's time of 20.13 was a personal best over the 4 mile distance.

  • Athletics Australia Indigenous Program visits South Australia
    24 students from the South Australian Indigenous Sport Training Academy (SAISTA) and the Kuarna Plains School in Elizabeth participated in a one-day Orientation To Coaching athletics workshop on Thursday 8th June. The course was conducted by Barb Stephens and Don Brown from the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association (ATFCA) and gave the participants an understanding of athletics in an informal setting. Kyle Vander Kuyp was also on hand to take the hurdle component of the course.
  • Elite Under 17 Camp Kicks Off
    Athletics Australia first Under 17 Elite Development Camp kicks off today at Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast with over 60 athletes from all disciplines. The squad, which is AWD inclusive, is made up of athletes born in 1990.
