Crowther jumps ahead of the pack at ACT Sportstar of the Year awards

World Junior Champion, Robbie Crowther jumped ahead of the pack to be named ACTSPORT AIS Sportstar of the Year at the ACT Sportstar of the Year Awards in Canberra on Saturday night.

Crowther's record breaking performance at the IAAF Junior World Championships in Beijing secured his nomination for the yearly award.

Crowther took out the award ahead of some tough opposition which included fellow AIS athletes Nathan Deakes, Patrick Johnson, Heath Francis and the Australian Race Walking team - Nathan Deakes, Luke Adams and Jared Tallent.

ACT Athletes dominated nominations for the ACT Sportstar of the Year Awards with over 20 nominations for the major awards.

World Record Holder and World Champion Murray Goldfinch was a finalist for the ACT Male Sportstar of the Year. Goldfinch who won the INAS-FID World Athletics Shot put and Discus Championships in 2005, went on to break his own World Record three times in November competing at ACT Athletics Interclub. Goldfinch had some tough opposition for the yearly award from cyclists Michael Rogers and Robert McLachlan. Rogers being the overall winner.

World Long Distance Mountain Running Champion, Emma Murray was up against the toughest opposition in the Female Sportstar of the Year category. Murray who won her second World title, in Colorado during August was up against the World's number 1 female basketballer Lauren Jackson and one of the top female cyclists in the World Oenone Wood. Jackson winning the Female award and the ACT Sportstar of the Year Awards.

18-year-old Lauren Boden was a strong contender for her second Junior Sportstar of the Year award following World Cup, World Junior and Commonwealth Games selections. Boden was up against World Junior Bronze medal cyclist Danny Ellis and 2006 Junior Basketball Player of the Year Patrick Mills. Ellis was named as the Junior Sportstar of the Year.

Gareth Candy was named as a finalist in the Coach of the Year Award for his successes in Orienteering, while ACT Veteran athlete Rad Leovic (78) was a finalist in the Master Sportstar of the Year for his performances in triathlon and Duathlon.
