Australia’s top Hammer Thrower Bronwyn Eagles today announced that she has officially retired from competition.
Eagles trained at the New South Wales Institute of Sport Throws' Centre at Greystanes, where four of the five best hammer throwers in Australian history have trained under coaches Ernie Shankelton and Lawrie Barclay.
The 2001 world championships bronze medallist and consecutive winner of the Telstra Female Athlete of the Year in 2001 and 2002 and Manchester Games silver medallist, today informed Athletics Australia that she had been considering retirement for quite some time and she is very happy with her decision.
Eagles retires as the custodian of the Commonwealth, Oceania and Australian records of 71.12.
"My intention is to take six months recreation time and after that time I will then enrol to do a University course, something I have wanted to do for some time" said the twenty five year old.
National Performance Manager Max Binnington expressed the thoughts of all in athletics in saying "Athletics Australia wishes Bronwyn all the very best for her future beyond the sport, her contribution to the sport and impact on it has been tremendous and she is to be congratulated for that".
