Thompson, Shelley and Cartwright favourites for 22nd Skilled Burnie Ten

Anna Thompson, fresh from her outstanding 20km best run at the inaugural IAAF World Road Running Championships in Hungary last Sunday, will start as favourite in the women’s field at the Skilled Burnie Ten this Sunday.

Thompson will join more than 2600 runners, a record number of participants, in the 10km road race starting in the heart of Burnie’s central business district on Tasmania’s North-West Coast.

The Victorian will be hoping to better her second place and time of 34:22 from last year when she was defeated by Commonwealth Games marathon champion Kerryn McCann.

Biting at her heels will be young New South Wales runner and winner of the Adelaide City to Bay race, Belinda Wilsher. Up and coming talent Sarah Grahame, 17, will also be pushing for a place.

In the men’s field, Queensland's Michael Shelley, the bronze medallist from the 2006 Telstra Australian cross-country championships, and Brett Cartwright, the reigning Telstra Zatopek champion, will be jostling for front position and the $3500 prize money up for grabs.

Young guns Collis Birmingham and Liam Adams, who finished 1 - 2 at the national under 23 Cross Country championships earlier this year, will also push the field on the fast out and back course on the dual lane highway.

The Skilled Burnie Ten is Australia's premier 10km road race and celebrates its 22nd birthday this year.
