Troop and Wellings headline crack field in this Saturday's Asics 5km Bolt

Eloise Wellings will headline a strong women’s field in this Saturday’s premier 5km road race – Noosa’s 2006 Asics 5km Bolt.

Wellings has fought her way back to personal best form over the last two years after a series of injuries threatened to prematurely end her promising junior career.

The Sydneysider, who is renowned for racing in a headband, is in fine form after completing a stellar European season, breaking her personal best times in both the 3000m and 5000m. The 2004 ASICS Bolt winner will be hard to beat as she takes a crack at Benita Johnson’s 15:22 race record which she set in 2002.

Two bright young running talents, Clare Geraghty from Queensland and Sydney’s Lisa Corrigan will be keen to make their mark on this prestigious event.

Geraghty tasted victory over this course at the Noosa Half Marathon in August and will have a distinct advantage knowing the course.

The 19-year-old looks set for a very bright future after some impressive results this year, winning the Jetty to Jetty and edged into second spot by one second at the Bridge to Brisbane. Back in August she also picked up a second place in the City to Surf.

Twenty-one year old Corrigan, the 2006 Commonwealth Games 1500m finalist, will be keen to do well after missing this event last year due to illness. Corrigan has also racked up some good results this year, winning the Canberra Time 10km, Bathurst Fun Run and Gold Coast 10km.

Not to be out done, the men’s field will also provide some distance class.

Victorian Lee Troop, the current Australian Marathon champion and former 5000m Australian record holder will be chasing the 13:41 race record set by Joseph Waweru in 1999.

Fellow Victorian, Collis Birmingham, fresh from his outstanding win at the Burnie Ten, will be keen to stand on the podium this year after finishing fourth last year. The 21-year old national under 23 cross country champion has produced some good results in 2006 and has a promising future ahead of him.

Queenslander Peter Nowill, a former Australian track champion and Olympic representative in steeplechase, has never won the prestigious Asics Bolt road race but is in good shape to take out the 2006 title.

Another Queenslander to look out for is Michael Shelley who placed second in this year’s Bridge to Brisbane Run and the Burnie Ten.

The Asics 5km Bolt was introduced to Noosa’s Festival program in 1991 and is now officially recognised as the premier 5km Road Race in Australia. The winners list includes some of the world’s best runners – Steve Moneghetti, Sonia O’Sullivan, Susie Power and the mullet-man himself Craig Mottram.

The 2006 Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival will be staged from 25 – 29th October.
