Cream of crop to contest ZATOPEK: 10

Olympic Park will showcase the cream of Australia’s athletic talent this Thursday night in the annual ZATOPEK: 10.

The headline race, the men’s 10 000m, will see rising talent Collis Birmingham take on Austrian 5000m record holder Gunther Weidlinger and US invader Bobby Curtis.

Birmingham, in hot form after defeating Craig Mottram in the Great Australian Run, will be seeking to replicate his 2007 Zatopek victory. The pace will be hot, with a $10 000 bonus on offer for any Australian record broken on the night.

The women’s race pits Kiwi stalwart Belinda Wimmer against half-marathon specialist Cassie Fien and junior star Lara Tamsett. All eyes will be on ‘next-big-thing’ Tamsett to see if she can mix it with the best when it really counts.

The athletics fraternity will also be keenly watching Olympic 400m semi-finalist Sean Wroe as he steps down in distance to challenge reigning Australian 100m Champion Otis Gowa and young sprint sensations Aaron Rouge-Serret and Sam Baines in the 200m. Former National Champion Josh Ross is also likely to make his return to the track after some time out of athletics.

Jeff Riseley will start favourite in the 1500m, the event he contested in Beijing. He will be desperate to prove his doubters wrong by recording a dominant victory.

In the women’s events, Tamsyn Lewis will be testing her post-Olympic fitness against New Zealand Champion Monique Williams in the 400m. Williams is in hot form and will be looking to take Lewis’ scalp home with her across the Tasman.

Olympian Lisa Corrigan has recently opted for a change of training location away from Canberra. The Zatopek 1500m will be Corrigan’s first chance to see whether her new Melbourne training base is paying dividends. She will
be pushed all the way by long time rival Nikki Molan.

Olympians Sarah Jamieson, Craig Mottram, Madeleine Pape, Lee Troop, Jared Tallent and Scott Martin will
also be on hand to meet and greet aspiring athletes and fans.

The main program commences at 7:30pm, with curtain raiser entertainment from 6:25pm. Tickets can be prepurchased here costing $10 (adults), $5 (kids) or at the gate $15 (adults) $5 (kids).
