Flame to burn bright on day four
Six Australians will feature on day four of the 12th IAAF world
championships in Berlin.
Beijing Olympic silver medalist
Sally McLellan has
been drawn in heat three for the heats of the women’s 100m hurdles,
where she will take on dual world champion Michelle Perry of the
United States. The first four across the line in each heat will
automatically qualify for the semi-finals.

In the first round of the men’s 400m, the first three in each heat
will automatically progress to the semi-finals. Three Australians
will feature, with 2008 Olympic semi-finalist
Joel
Milburn out in lane eight in heat three, where he will
meet perennial fourth-place getter Chris Brown of the
Bahamas.
Commonwealth Games champion
John Steffensen will
line up in heat four where he will take on Olympic champion LaShawn
Merritt of the United States.
Current national champion
Sean Wroe will face off
against Olympic finalist Martyn Rooney of Great Britain in the
seventh and final heat.
World championships debutantes
Benn Harradine
(discus throw) and
Petrina Price (high jump) will
also compete in the qualifying rounds in the morning session.
Returning to action on day four of the titles is Usain Bolt, the
Jamaican sensation to feature in the much-anticipated heats of the
men’s 200m.
FLAME NEWS
Beijing Olympic champion
Steve Hooker, who injured
his right adductor 10 days ago, today rates himself a 60 per cent
chance of overcoming the injury and taking to the runway. Hooker
has been receiving intensive treatment on the injury, and will make
a final decision right before the qualifying round on Thursday
morning.

Australian walker
Chris Erickson will not compete
in Friday’s 50km race walk, appendicitis forcing his withdrawal
from the world championships. Erickson underwent surgery on Monday
night in Berlin and will remain hospitalised for the next couple of
days while he recovers before returning to the team hotel and
flying back to Australia.
