Athletics Australia extends its most sincere thanks to you, the athletics fraternity, for your continued support of track and field throughout 2009.
As we prepare to say hello or 'namaste' to a massive 2010 that includes the New Delhi Commonwealth Games, it is important that we look back on what has been an outstanding year of competition culminating in a record medal haul at the 2009 Berlin World Championships.
Including gold from Dani Samuels in the discus and Steve Hooker in the pole vault, Australia secured four medals at our sport’s pinnacle event before an audience of millions.
Berlin also coincided with the launch of the Australian Flame. With new members to be inducted at every World Championships, Olympic and Commonwealth Games in the future, the name is a perfect reflection of the team’s current red hot form.
The New Year will see the launch of the Australian Athletics Tour featuring five meets across five major cities and including the IAAF accredited Melbourne Track Classic.
The tour will be followed shortly thereafter by the 2&5 88th Australian Athletics Championships & Commonwealth Games Selection Trials in Perth as we look ahead to the Commonwealth Games, 2010’s showcase event.
Featuring Australia’s most recognisable athletics stars, these Tour meets and national championships should be pencilled into your calendar now with dates for each as follows:
Saturday 30 January – Australia Cup (Canberra, ACT)
Saturday 6 February – Brisbane Track Classic (Brisbane, OLD)
Friday 12 February – Briggs Athletics Classic (Hobart, TAS)
Saturday 27 February – Sydney Track Classic (Sydney, NSW)
Thursday 4 March – IAAF Melbourne Track Classic (Melbourne, VIC)
Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 April – 2&5 88th Australian Athletics Championships (Perth, WA)
Other important events this Australian athletics season include the World Cross Country Selection Trial, Australian 20km Road Walk Championships, the Australian Underage AWD Championships and the Australian Junior Championships, with information on each available by clicking here.
Whether it is a new personal best, taking part in a recreational run or simply getting involved at your local athletics or Little Athletics club, we hope that the New Year provides you with every opportunity to succeed in track and field.
Athletics Australia wish you a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and looks forward to welcoming you back trackside for an unbelievable showcase of Australian athletics in 2010.
