Athletics Australia and AUSRAPID have announced two key appointments for the 2009 INAS-FID Global Games to be held in Liberec, Czech Republic from 5-14 July 2009.
The Global Games are the premier international event for elite athletes with an intellectual disability. Established in 2004, they are seen as an integral mechanism for the reintroduction of events for athletes with an intellectual disability to the Paralympic Games program.
Michael Thomson has been appointed Athletics Australia Global Games Preparation Program (AA-GGPP) Coordinator, while Brett Jones of Queensland will take on the role of Athletics Head Coach.
Thomson brings a wealth of experience to the role of AA-GGPP Coordinator, following his appointment as Team Manager in 2007. The position will be responsible for coordinating the team for the 2009 Global Games.
As the Head Coach for the 2009 Global Games, Jones will work in close consultation with Thomson to provide technical and coaching input in relation to the preparation of the team for Liberec and the AA-GGPP Plan.
Jones enters the role following his stint as Sprints and Jumps Coordinator at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, a year that saw Australia ranked second in the world for disability athletics. In addition to his Paralympic experience at Athens and Beijing, Jones has worked in various roles at the IPC World Athletics Championships (2002, 2006) and the FESPIC Games (1999, 2003, 2006).
In over a decade of involvement in disability athletics Jones has coached numerous Paralympic and World Championship medallists, including Lisa Llorens, Geoff Tappet, Julie Smith, Brian Harvey and Sharon Rackham.
