Martin musters up an A-qualifier

With only ten days to go until the qualifying window closes for the world championships, Victorian shot putter Scott Martin has thrown his first A-qualifier, launching the ball 20.45m to secure victory in Salamanca overnight.

The 26-year-old has been tantalising close this season, registering three B qualifiers, before finally breaking through last night, surpassing the 'A' mark by 15 centimetres on his sixth and final attempt.

The qualifying period which commenced on August 1 last year, ends on July 19. Australian selectors will meet on July 20 to decide the final make up of the team for the world championships.

In other results, Joel Milburn showed that he is returning to form just 37 days out from the world championships, clocking a season's best 45.83s to win the 400m.

Tamsyn Lewis, who is yet to decide whether she will contest the 400m hurdles or 400m flat in Berlin, finished third over the sticks in Salamanca, stopping the clock in 57.52s.
