Beijing Olympic finalist Dani Samuels, 21, threw a season's best in the discus competition at the Usti nad Laben Grand Prix in the Czech Republic yesterday. Samuels threw 62.89m just six centimetres short of her lifetime best of 62.95m.
Samuels placed second to the Czech Republic’s Vera Pospisilova-Cechlova who threw just two centimetres further than Samuels with a 62.91m effort.
Pospisilova-Cechlova, who is ranked above Samuels this year and was fifth in Beijing and has a personal best of 67.71m, was always going to be a tough competitor for Samuels, 10 years her junior.
Confirming her consistency and ability to perform against top competition, Samuels has thrown over 62 metres on five occasions this year against the world champion, Olympic champion and in the World University Games. Although 62.59m claimed bronze at the Beijing Olympics, the performance level at the world championships in Berlin is expected be tougher.
Samuels returns today to Cologne, Germany to continue her world championship preparations.
