Host nation Japan added further excitement to a national holiday yesterday (Monday, November 23) by winning the 2009 Chiba Ekiden Relay in a time of 2:05.58.
Followed across the line by countrymen in the Japanese Collegiate team (2:07.47), it was Kenya who rounded out the top three in a time of 2:08.34.
In the absence of last year’s winner Ethiopia, Japan’s victory was set up by Yuriko Kobayashi in the second leg of the race. Her time bordered on a record and the lead was not relinquished again.
Australia, led by returning distance champion Craig Mottram, finished seventh in a time of 2:11.35.
In his first competitive outing since the Great Australian Run in late 2008, Mottram covered his 5km section of the course in 13:22 placing Australia in first place at the first ribbon change.
Accepting the ribbon from Mottram was Nikki Chapple, followed by Timothy Rowe, Clare Geraghty, Kane Wille and Lisa Flint.
Split times for the Australian team were:
- Mottram (5km): 13:22
- Chapple (5km): 15:27
- Rowe (10km): 30:15
- Geraghty (5km): 17:00
- Wille (10km): 30:19
- Flint (7.195km): 25:11
