South Australia's best set for Adelaide Invitational

Some of South Australia’s best and most talented athletes are set to take the stage in the opening meet of the Adelaide Invitational for the 2009/10 athletics season tonight at Santos Stadium. The first of the four meet series, presented by Adelaide Airport and the City of West Torrens will commence at 7:50pm and promises to provide plenty of action and excitement for spectators.

On paper, the highlight of the meet looks to be the men’s 100m with a quality field assembled to take on track and field’s blue-ribbon event. Whilst there is no Usain Bolt on the start list, Athens Olympic silver medallist in the 4x400m relay, Mark Ormrod, will make his return to the track. Lining up alongside Ormrod will be former world junior representative, Todd Bateman, who posted 10.68 over 100m a week ago. Bateman appears to be returning to peak form after an extended absence from the track through injury and will enter the event as favourite. National 400m finalist and World University Games representative, Clay Watkins will tackle the shorter distance before turning his focus to his pet event later in the program. Exciting youngster, Michael Brusnahan will also be searching for a quick time, with the conditions predicted to be warm with the possibility of a slight tailwind.

In the women’s equivalent, the consistent Leanne Hodge will do battle with the National Heptathlon Champion Lauren Foote in the absence of injured national 100m medallist and Commonwealth Games aspirant, Alicia Wrench-Doody. Hodge will be looking for the double in the 200m, but challenges will be mounted by Bridgid Connolly, former state representative Andrea Sparrow, and Foote.

The Men’s 800m is looming as an exciting showdown. A quality field of youngsters look set to take on former 800m State Champion Robert Killmier who has shown good early season form. Junior Matt Axford showed last weekend that he is not afraid to take on the older athletes and will be looking to lower his personal best and challenge Killmier.
