Lapierre the best of the Aussies in Europe

Australian athletes have featured at Grand Prix meets in Gateshead and Zagreb overnight as the European athletics season enters the home straight.

At the British Grand Prix in Gateshead, England, long jump sensation Fabrice Lapierre was the best placed of the Australians, finishing second to newly-crowned world champion Dwight Phillips (USA).

Lapierre leapt 8.16m (+3.2) to clinch second place behind Phillips’ winning distance of 8.39m (+0.6), continuing an impressive European season that has seen him take out wins at both the Athens and Madrid Grands Prix and finish fourth at last month’s world titles in Berlin.

Also on the podium last night was Western Australian javelin thrower Kimberley Mickle, her best effort of 59.51m seeing her into third place behind Berlin silver medallist Barbora Spotakova (CZE) with a throw of 65.57m.

World championships 4x400m relay bronze medallist Sean Wroe skipped his preferred one-lap event to line up in the 200m in Gateshead, stopping the clock at 22.05 to place eighth behind world championships finalist Shawn Crawford (USA) in 20.80.

Also in action at the British Grand Prix were 1500m men Mitchell Kealey and Ryan Gregson, Kealey placing eighth in the 12-man field in a time of 3:43.14 and Gregson crossing the line in ninth with a time of 3:43.31.

Berlin finalist Leonel Manzano (USA) took out the event in 3:41.10.

In Zagreb, Croatia, Henry Frayne led the way for the Australians, placing fourth in the long jump with a leap of 7.61m (+0.8). World championships finalist Yahya Berrabah took out the event with a leap of 8.15m (+0.5).

On the track Collis Birmingham crossed the line fifth in the 1500m in 3:39.10, just three seconds behind winner Belal Mansoor Ali (BRN) in 3:36.20.

Fellow Australian Nick Bromley placed 12th in the event, stopping the clock at 3:42.69.

In the women’s 800m, Victorian two-lap specialist Madeleine Pape placed ninth in the field in a time of 2:03.08.

The European season now heads to Brussels, Belgium, for the final Golden League meet of the year this Friday, September 4, before hitting Rieti, Italy, two days later for the ultimate round of the Grand Prix circuit.

The season will conclude on the weekend of September 12-13 with the World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, Greece.
