Athletics Australia is proud to announce that
Rohan Short has signed on as the national body’s
new Paralympic Program Manager, set to lead the country’s top track
and field athletes with a disability towards the London Paralympic
Games in 2012.
Short, who worked as Athletics Australia’s Development Officer from
1998 to 2000, was a key player in founding the organisation’s early
integration programs with national sporting organisations for the
disabled and in administering the national track and field
championships for athletes with a disability (AWD).
Short re-joins the organisation following four years as Assistant
Coach of the National Basketball League’s Townsville Crocodiles,
where he worked with some of the nation’s top basketball
talent.
A qualified physical education teacher, Short’s career resume also
includes time as Project Officer at the Victorian Institute of
Sport, where he was involved in the development of a talent
identification legacy program for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth
Games that aimed to transition high-performing secondary school
students into existing high performance pathways.
Short said he was looking forward to again working with Australia’s
AWD community.
“I am absolutely delighted about working together with the talented
athletes, coaches and support staff who drive the Australian
Paralympic track and field program forward,” he said.
“The Paralympic Preparation Program team works tirelessly around
the country to ensure Australian athletes can succeed on the world
stage. I hope our teamwork continues to build and we can support
each other over the journey.”
Short, who commenced his new role with Athletics Australia on
Tuesday, June 15, takes over the helm at an exciting time for the
sport’s AWD community, with 12 athletes en route to the
Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, in October, and larger
Australian contingents expected to don the green and gold at the
IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch (NZL) in January
next year and the Paralympic Games in London (GBR) from August,
2012.
“Our first goal in preparation for the 2012 Paralympic Games is
ensuring we perform strongly as a team at the 2011 IPC Athletics
World Championships in Christchurch early next year,” Short
said.
“The depth of competition and talent internationally continues to
improve, so ensuring our athletes are given every opportunity to
develop through effective support networks and optimal training
environments is critical to our success at the Paralympic Games in
London.
“It’s an exciting time ahead for track and field athletes with a
disability in Australia. We have had some great results
post-Beijing and now is the time to put all our energy into
supporting our athletes moving forward.”
