Olympian bids farewell

Australian Olympic representative Ian Sinfield has passed away following a long battle with illness.

Sinfield represented Australia at the 1960 edition of the Olympic Games in Rome, Italy, where he placed 43rd of 69 competitors in the men’s marathon, crossing the line in a time of 2:34.16.

In the same year he took out the national marathon crown (2:25.14), his first and only Australian marathon title.

Sinfield again donned the green and gold at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Western Australia, but was forced to retire from the race at the 40km-mark, agonisingly short of the finish line.

On behalf of the Australian athletics community, Athletics Australia recognises the achievements of Ian Sinfield and passes on its sincere condolences to the Sinfield family.
