OLYMPICS: Hooker to begin title defence

Reigning champion Steve Hooker (WA) will begin his charge for Olympic gold in London this evening AEST when he takes to the runway in Group A of the men’s pole vault qualification (7:00pm AEST 08.08.12).

Hooker will be joined in the morning session by Australia’s charges in round one of the men’s 5000m – David McNeill (Vic), Collis Birmingham (Vic) and Craig Mottram (Vic).

McNeill and Birmingham will face off with local hero Mo Farah in heat one (7:45pm AEST 08.08.12), before Mottram joins 10,000m silver medallist Galen Rupp (USA) in heat two (8:06pm AEST 08.08.12).

Continuing the middle distance theme into the evening session are Kaila McKnight (Vic) and Zoe Buckman (ACT), who will line up in semi-final one (4:45am AEST 09.08.12) and semi-final two (04:56am AEST 09.08.12) of the women’s 1500m respectively.

Closing out the green and gold charge is Jarrod Bannister (Qld), a 2011 IAAF world championship finalist, Group B of the men’s javelin qualification (5:35am AEST 09.08.12).
