Fifteen qualifiers on big weekend for juniors

Performances are heating up as the IAAF world junior championships in Barcelona (ESP) draw closer, with 15 athletes recording performances better than the Athletics Australia qualifying marks last weekend.

Nine of the performances were recorded at the Briggs Athletics Classic, the third and final National Athletics Series meet this year. They were:

-       Jarryd Buchan; 400m, 47.27
-       Luke Cann; javelin throw, 69.89m
-       Elliott Lang; javelin throw, 69.45m
-       Robert Johnson; hammer throw, 66.43m
-       Sarah Carli; 400m hurdles, 59.16
-       Tessa Consedine; 400m hurdles, 59.20
-       Kate Ryan; 400m hurdles, 59.98
-       Danielle McConnell; hammer throw, 57.90m
-       Mikki Genge; hammer throw, 56.59m

Elsewhere across the country we saw:

-       Carla Williams clock 24.08 (-2.5) in the girl’s 200m in Queensland
-       Jessica Pickles cross the line in 48:07.13 in the girl’s 10,000m walk in Queensland.
-       Her training partner Brad Aiton also crossed below the qualifying mark for the girl’s 10,000m walk in 42:51.03
-       Nicholas Hough blazed the straight for 13.93 (-0.1) in the boy’s 110m hurdles
-       Cruz Hogan heave 67.91m at home in Perth in the boy’s javelin throw.
-       Liz Parnov soar 4.40m in the girl’s pole vault at the Western Australia Athletics Stadium.

These performances now take the number of athletes boasting at least one world junior championship qualifier in one or more events to 41.

The culmination of the selection process for the IAAF world junior championships will come in the under 20 aged events at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships as these double as the selection trial for the Australian Spark team.
