Athletics Australia have today announced a team of five for the IAAF world half marathon championships in Kavarna, Bulgaria this October, with London-bound Jess Trengove (SA) set to lead the squad just months after making her green and gold debut at the 2012 Olympic Games.
It will be Trengove’s second appearance at the event after combining with Nikki Chapple (Vic), Cassie Fien (Qld), Melinda Vernon (NSW) and Benita Willis (Qld) in 2010 to finish fourth as a team in 3:40.14.
Trengove will be joined by Liam Adams (Vic), Clint Perret (Vic), Harry Summers (NSW) and Lara Tamsett (NSW) at the championships. Perret in 2010 was the only Australian man to compete, crossing 44th in 1:06.46
The IAAF world half marathon championships is an annual event that has been contested since 1992, with distance run briefly adjusted to 20km in 2006 and 2007.
Australia’s history at the championships includes a silver medal to Steve Monegetti (1:01:10) in 1993, and a bronze medal to Willis (1:09.26) in 2003.
