The 2013 National Athletics Series kicks off with the Hunter Track Classic in Newcastle on Saturday 2 February, with the start lists confirmed to include multiple members of the Australian Flame national athletics team including London silver medallist Mitchell Watt.
Queenslander Watt, who leapt 8.16m in the long jump in London to snare silver, is the current Australian record holder and will compete in his pet event in Newcastle.
Joining him at the opening event of the National Athletics Series will be fellow London Olympians Ryan Gregson in the men’s 800 metres, Olympic discus finalist Benn Harradine and sprinter Anthony Alozie of the Australian men’s 4x100m relay team that made the 2012 Olympic final.
The women’s 1,500 metres at the Hunter Track Classic is also shaping as a feature event with a strong field revealed that promises to give a tantalising glimpse of the future of Australia’s middle distance future.
Amongst those named for the women’s metric mile in Newcastle is Jenny Blundell, who was an Australian representative at the 2012 IAAF World Junior Championships, and 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships team members Anna Laman and Katelyn Simpson.
