Steve Hooker and Craig Mottram at the inaugural luncheon Tatiana lights up the dance floor JOHN LANDY LUNCH CLUB CELEBRATES THE WORLDS IN FINE STYLE

Although geographically many thousands of kilometres away, there is no doubt that a plethora of support for the Australian athletics team was evident at Athletics Australia’s John Landy Club function held on Tuesday, August 28. Held at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium, the evening was hosted by Tiffany Cherry (ESPN) and Shane Healey (3AW), and featured a panel discussion with former greats of the sport, fine dining and live coverage of the IAAF World Athletics Championships beamed from Osaka, Japan.

Champion athletes Robert de Castella, Gary Honey, Steve Moneghetti and Tim Forsyth provided a wonderful insight for those guests in attendance, as they analysed and debated various elements of the championships to date. Personal experiences and memories of competing on a world stage were also free-flowing from the panellists. Forsyth was perhaps the most revealing of all as he viewed footage for the first time ever of his controversial elimination from the high jump competition at the 1995 World Championships held in Gothenburg. It certainly gave those at the dinner a remarkable insight into just how tough international track and field is on a world scale, and the highs and lows that go with competing at this level.

A range of prizes were also on offer during the night including a signed Australian team singlet which ensured a wonderful finish to a great evening for one athletics fan. The dinner also allowed a unique opportunity for networking with a range of business and non-business athletics supporters (arguably the most notable being John Landy – who has lent his name and support to the venture) and appropriately complemented the inaugural function for the John Landy Lunch Club held in February this year.

Developed to expand the reach of athletics and to establish a forum in which like-minded individuals can come together for a mix of sport, business, food and entertainment, the John Landy Lunch Club continues to grow. The next event will coincide with the World Athletics Tour Meet, Australia’s premier athletic competition, to be held at Melbourne Olympic Park in February 2008.

ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA'S JOHN LANDY LUNCH CLUB KICKS OFF WITH A BANG!

Athletics Australia’s John Landy Lunch Club was launched in spectacular fashion in February  2007 with 300 guests enjoying a sensational afternoon of athletics-centric entertainment in the lead-up to the Telstra A-Series Melbourne; Australia’s premier athletic meet and first leg of the World Athletics Tour.

The glamorous Tatiana Grigorieva worked her magic on the dance floor to open proceedings with a bang. Teaming up with her dance partner from Channel 7’s Dancing with the Stars, Tatiana performed her jive routine only metres from the delighted and appreciative crowd.

MC Clinton Grybas (3AW) kept the entertainment coming and athletics commentator David Culbert ensured the audience received a special insight into what makes the world's best athletes tick.

The world’s best pole vaulters - American six-metre men Brad Walker and Toby Stevenson, along with Australians Steve Hooker and Paul Burgess, demonstrated why they are so popular at athletics events the world over, with entertaining anecdotes on what it takes to leap over small buildings in a single bound.

The self-titled ‘Cheetah Man’ - Olympic 200m champion Shawn Crawford – enjoyed the spotlight, with his mouth moving just as fast as his feet while Australian distance star Craig Mottram left the crowd well aware of his intentions over the next two years on the road to the Beijing Olympic Games.

The athletics fans in the crowd loved the opportunity to be so close to their heroes, including the the much-respected John Landy - who has lent his name and support to the venture - whilst those new to the sport enjoyed the open and honest approach from the stars of athletics.

A second function will be held in Melbourne on August 28, 2007 during the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.
