Undoubtedly one of Australia’s greatest athletes, John Landy is a true gentleman who has continually displayed the attributes of sportsmanship, courage and nobility. He is a role model for all Australian sportsmen and women.
A world class athlete, the two-time Olympian and five-time national champion was just the second man in the world to run a sub-four minute mile.
However, Landy is often recognised for his silver medal at the 1954 Vancouver Empire Games. Dubbed the
Race of the Century, Landy looked over his left shoulder in the final turn of his last lap while Britain's Roger Bannister passed him on the right.
In the mile race at the 1956 National Championships, Landy produced arguably one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history when he doubled back to check on the fallen Ron Clarke before re-commencing and charging home to victory.
Landy’s achievements off the track are just as extensive. An accomplished businessman, in 2001 he was honoured with the Companion of the Order of Australia and appointed the 26th Governor of Victoria, a position he held for more than five years.
