Australian marathon runner Andrew Letherby tuned up for next Sunday's ING New York City marathon by smashing the course record by a whopping 23 seconds to take out the Manitou Springs Mayors Cup 5k in Colorado today (Saturday).
Letherby broke away from American Ryan Kirkpatrick to win by two seconds on the mostly uphill last mile reaching the finish line situated at 6,400 feet of altitude in an excellent 15.03 taking 26 seconds off the record set by British Olympian Justin Chaston in 2003.
Letherby is aiming to better his personal best of 2:11.42 set in Berlin last year as he bids for a top 10 placing in the outstanding field being assembled in New York next Sunday morning for one of the world's most famous marathons.
