Eleven inducted as Athletics Australia Honorary Life Members

 

At the Athletics Australia Annual General Meeting eleven members of the athletics fraternity were inducted as Life Members.

Awarded to individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the sport of athletics in Australia, Life Membership is a great honour and we congratulate the following recipients:

Bill Bailey

From his contribution as an Athletics Australia Board Member to his Council Membership with the IAAF, Bailey has been an integral participant in the world of athletics for more than three decades.

Bailey’s contribution has also been acknowledged in the past through in his receipt of the IAAF Plaque of Merit and the Oceania Athletics Association Award of Merit.

Colin Stubbings

A former Queensland GPS 800m Champion, Stubbings has previously been an Athletics Australia Board Member and President of Queensland Athletics.

He was instrumental in turning the Gold Coast Marathon into the Australian Championship and is a regular Technical Official.

Norm Osborne OAM

As a coach of athletes who have competed for Australia at the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships, Osborne was awarded an Athletics Victoria 50 Years of Service Award in 2001.

A notable high jumper and hurdler between 1948 and 1963, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2001.

Raymond Henry Weinberg AM

A competitor at the London and Helsinki Olympic Games in the hurdles, Weinberg has also travelled as a coach and the athletics team manager to the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

A former Australian and British Commonwealth Record Holder for the 120m hurdles, Weinberg was an Olympic commentator for Channel 7 in 1980.

Ian Boswell

A pioneer in the introduction of photo finish technology both in Australia and internationally, Boswell served as the International Photo Finish Judge at the 1999 World Championships and the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

A former board member of Athletics South Australia, Boswell has most recently been involved in an official time keeping role at the Athens and Beijing Olympics.

James Minehane

Already a life member of Queensland Athletics, Minehane has most notably been involved in athletics as a jumps official.

His commitment to the sport was recognised in his invitation to officiate at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Michael Thomson

On the back of an illustrious junior athletics career, Thomson has been a member of the ACT Athletics Executive for many years including a previous Presidency.

In 30 years of service to Australian athletics, Thomson has been involved in the organising committees at previous Commonwealth, Paralympic and Olympic Games.

Nancy Atterton

Nancy, who won a gold medal at the 1954 Vancouver Commonwealth Games, has served as an Australian team coach at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, the 1991 World Championships and the 1992 Olympic Games.

John Atterton

John, a former President of Athletics NSW, has also served as an Athletics Australia Board Member and was instrumental in the establishing of the athletics division at the NSW Institute of Sport.

Richard Carter

Carter has contributed to the athletics world as a coach, competition official, meet organiser, team manager and administrator with a constant focus on the need for sporting innovation.

A former Board Member at Athletics South Australia, Carter has acted as Team Manager at Australian Championships on nine occasions and as a Meet Director for numerous Grand Prix meets and Australian Championships.

Owen Heness

The current representative of Athletics ACT on the Australian Olympic Committee Council, Heness has been involved in athletics for more than two decades.

He is a former President of Athletics ACT, Heness has also served as a senior technical official at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
