South Australian winners bound for Berlin

The IAAF World Athletics Day slogan, 'Towards Berlin,' has taken on new meaning for not one but two lucky South Australians, who were last week named winners of the World Athletics Day Trip to Berlin competition.

The 2009 IAAF World Athletics Day was held on Saturday, May 16. In celebration of this event Athletics South Australia hosted its annual competition, the Streets City v Country Challenge, where teams from the city and country go head-to-head in a fun, participation-based competition for school-aged athletes.

Sixteen-year-old Matthew Sinclair, who competed in the 800m, and Kayla Hammond (17), who competed in the 400m, were named major prize winners from the Oceania region. Both athletes represent Tea Tree Gully Athletics Club.

“Its fantastic news for the Streets City v Country competition and for Matt and Kayla who both compete regularly in interclub competition and at junior national level for South Australia,” Athletics South Australia Development Officer Toby Medlin said.

Matthew and Kayla will travel to Berlin to catch the last four days of the 12th IAAF world championships action from August 19 – 23, adding another two vocal fans to the crowd cheering the Australian team home.
