Hurdles young gun sets new national record in Sydney

Local Tathra girl Chloe Jamieson has twice set a new national Under 16 200m hurdles record at the New South Wales All Schools Championships in Sydney at the weekend.

Jamieson posted her first record-breaking run in the heats of the 200m hurdles, clocking a personal best time of 27.67 (-0.5w) and setting new Australian and New South Wales records in the process.

She backed up that effort with an even quicker time in the event final just two hours later to lower the Australian record to 27.54 into a headwind of -0.9, eclipsing the previous event record of 27.91 held by Jessica Gulli, a former Australian representative at the world youth championships (2005) world junior championships (2006).

"All is looking good for nationals," Jamieson said, the nationwide championships to be contested from December 4-7 in Hobart, Tasmania.

Earlier in the meet Jamieson took out the 90m hurdles in a time of 12.73 (w: 0.1), almost half a second faster than her nearest rival in 13.20. Jamieson's time was just 0.08 outside the state record held by outstanding junior hurdler Carly Rodger.

On the back of Jamieson's two gold medals at the weekend coach Matt Beckenham said he was looking forward to her run in the 400m hurdles at the All Schools Championships next month.

“She will be up an age group but Chloe has already shown me that she has some wonderful potential in the 400m hurdles and I really think she has the potential to be one of the Australia’s top hurdlers in years to come,” he said.

In the lead-up to Hobart Jamieson will join fellow squad members Lauren Boden (three-time national 400m hurdles champion) and Melissa Breen (national 200m champion) in action at the NSW relays championships from November 21-22.
