In a time of 29:06.05 across 10km, Australian Flame David McNeill has finished second in the individual men’s event at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Indiana, USA.
Second only to Al Lawrence, a fellow Australian who won the event in 1959 and 1960 with the University of Houston, McNeill's performance is the best result by an Australian at the event since Mike Power's second in 1999.
In the team event, McNeill’s performance was instrumental in securing fourth place for Northern Arizona University whom as a group achieved an average 10km time of 30:10.
His team mates at the university include fellow Australian Ben Ashkettle. Ashkettle posted the third fastest time for his team crossing the line in 30:33.
Victory, however, in the men’s team event went to Oklahoma State University followed by the University of Oregon in second and the University of Alabama in third.
Matt Gibney (Villanova University) and Matt Bayley (Iona University) were the other two Australians competing as part of the men’s team event. They completed the course in 31:10 and 30:43 respectively.
In the women’s team event, Australian Brooke Simpson together with her team mates from Villanova University took first place ahead of Florida State University and the University of Washington.
Simpson posted a time of 21:02 across the 6km course and was joined on the winner’s dais by team mates Amanda Marino, Sheila Reid, Bogdana Mimic, Alison Smith, Nicole Schappert and Kaitlyn Tallman.
Fellow Australian Rebecca Lowe completed the course in 20:19. Securing her team’s best time in the process, Lowe’s performance for Florida University comes on the back of winning her regional race in the lead up to the event.
Genevieve Lacaze is Lowe’s team mate at Florida University. Her time of 21:17 across the 6km course rounds out the Australian female contingent at the event.
